Tateri Ueda

Tateri Ueda (植田たてり) is an illustrator born in Tokyo. After graduating from the Kuwasawa Design School, Ueda began working freelance, and since 2016 has worked steadily as a cover artist and illustrator for Japanese literary publishers and magazines. The figures are usually girls or young women, drawn with a light, even line and placed in sparse, still settings, with the focus on a small gesture, a pause or the passage of time. The concept for Ueda's first solo exhibition summarised this: each person's today, arrived at by the accumulation of many hours.

Ueda's covers and interior illustrations include Watashi no Utsukushii Niwa by Yu Nagira (Poplar), Zettai Neko kara Ugokanai by Motoko Arai (KADOKAWA), Nandemo Mitsukaru Yoru ni, Kokoro dake ga Mitsukaranai by Kaito Tohata (Shinchosha), Tokyo Geidai Monogatari by Kenichiro Mogi (Kodansha Bunko), Houkago no Dokusho Club by Ruiko Kodemari (Kaiseisha) and the serialisation of Tomihiko Morimi's Sherlock Holmes no Gaisen in Shosetsu BOC (Chuokoron-Shinsha). Ueda has drawn magazine covers for Eureka, MdN and Minpo, illustrations for the music videos of AKROGLAM and ISEKI, and key visuals for clients such as Valve, Shiseido China and KITTE Nagoya, and was featured in ILLUSTRATION 2018 (Shoeisha).

Ueda's first solo exhibition, Kyou (Today), was held at 9DAYS GALLERY, Shibuya Modi, Tokyo, in 2023. Tateri Ueda's work is presented in Europe by Tokiol.
